Spain midfielder Gavi remains unconvinced that Argentine player Leandro Paredes warrants suspension for his role in the post‑final altercation.
During Spain’s 1‑0 celebration, Argentine squad members Leandro Paredes, Nahuel Mайтл, Thiago Almada and assistant coach Roberto Ayala appeared involved in an on‑field confrontation.
Paredes allegedly shoved Spain’s Eric Garcia by the throat, prompting Gavi—an unused substitute—to step in. However, Almada tackled Gavi to the ground, preventing further intervention.
Reports also indicate that Paredes forced the Barcelona midfielder’s face toward the turf with his hand, adding a physical element to the skirmish.
FIFA has appointed a disciplinary and ethics prosecutor to investigate the incident; any participant could face a suspension, while the Argentine Football Association may incur a fine.
“I don’t think Paredes should be suspended,” Gavi told El Partidazo de COPE.external“It’s not a positive image for children, but football does have an element of physicality and aggression.”
“The most logical action would have been to send Paredes off during the match. At the end of the day, it remains football عقب, and it has to be treated as such.”
