Gavin McKenna’s entry into the NHL began cautiously, but his momentum surged dramatically with his most recent outing.

At 18 years old, the prospect tallied his first career goal and first career assist, finishing with two points in Toronto’s 5-4 comeback victory against the Nashville Predators.

Hockey fans and media personalities turned to social media on Tuesday to discuss the No. 1 overall pick’s first genuine breakout performance at the NHL level.

“Guys I think Gavin McKenna is going to be just fine,” @RealPaulRoss posted on X.

McKenna had gone scoreless through his first three NHL games, leaving Maple Leafs supporters eagerly anticipating the moment the Whitehorse native would reach the scoresheet.

Anticipation finally eased in the second period when he recorded an assist on John Tavares’ goal, reducing the Toronto deficit to two goals. The crowd at Scotiabank Arena rose for a standing ovation to honor the young player’s achievement.

McKenna’s first career goal arrived later in the period, rifling a shot over the shoulder of Predators goaltender Juuse Saros to narrow the margin to one, with former first-overall pick Auston Matthews credited with the assist.

“A first career goal fit for a future super star,” Sportsnet’s Sam McKee (@SamAMcKee) wrote. “Absolute laser beam.”

“Back to overreacting to McKenna in a positive way,” Sportsnet’s JD Bunkis (@JDBunkis) added.

“Looks like a Calder favourite,” @StickEFingrs said of McKenna’s play.

While it remains too early to hand out individual honors, the performance served as early evidence that he possesses the talent required to meet the high expectations associated with being the first pick in a hockey market as passionate as Toronto.

“McKenna with his first. 2 points tonight now happy for him kid is going to be so nasty,” Spittin’ Chiclets host and former NHLer Ryan Whitney (@RyanWhitney6) said.

“This kid’s gonna be a treat to watch,” @Jonah_Fleischer said of McKenna.

Matthews stole the show following the Maple Leafs’ push into overtime, scoring his second goal of the season on a rebound from William Nylander.

Despite Matthews ultimately completing the comeback, it was McKenna who was named the first star of the game.

“Not a Leafs fan but pretty damn happy Gavin McKenna shut a lot of people up tonight.” TSN’s Jesse Pollock (@JPolly22) posted.

“The Gavin McKenna era has officially arrived,” @JoeyFerg declared.
