Geno Smith spent more than an hour speaking with police after his ex accused him of assaulting her last month. In newly released body‑camera footage, the Jets quarterback insisted throughout the interview that he was the victim.
Davie Police were called to Smith’s South Florida mansion on June 21 at about 4:40 p.m. to investigate a battery complaint. Smith immediately claimed he was innocent.
In footage obtained by The California Post on Thursday, Smith told officers that his ex—whom he now employs—turned physical after dropping his child off at his home earlier that day.
“She hit me,” Smith said. “I got a knot in the back of my head. I have a scratch on my face. I’m trying to say I don’t want her to go to jail. But if she’s trying to put me in jail, what can I do?” He posed for photos with officers, pointing out his injuries while an officer took pictures on his iPhone.
Smith explained the injuries by saying, “It’s all just ’cause I’m [physically] moving her. She’s swinging at me, I’m trying to duck it. That’s when she hit me in the back of the head.”
The woman, however, gave officers a different account. After calling 911, she said Smith beat her after she entered his residence to bring back their son. She noted a cut on her hand and bruising on her arm.
Police could not determine who was the primary aggressor and advised both parties to file a case with the State Attorney’s Office if they wished to press charges. The investigation was closed at the scene but later reopened; on July 14, Davie PD announced the probe had been closed again without arrests.
Smith, who was traded to the Jets from the Raiders earlier this year, has not yet commented publicly on the incident.
