A key bridge in Kyiv has been struck by Russian drones for the second consecutive day, coinciding with an unexpected visit by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

The Pivnichnyi (Northern) Bridge was hit on Sunday morning, a day after it was first struck by drones in an attack that damaged the road surface and caused traffic disruption.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said Sunday’s strike also damaged a heating main, noting that the northeastern Desnyanskyi district would experience a temporary loss of hot water as a result.

Over the past four days, several major bridges in Kyiv have come under attack as Moscow intensifies its campaign against critical infrastructure in the capital.

Unverified video footage of Sunday’s strike shows vehicles moving across the bridge as a drone crashes into it and explodes, producing a fireball. A plume of black smoke can be seen rising above the structure.

Klitschko reported the strike on Telegram, writing: “Hitting the roadway on the North Bridge. Emergency services are en route to the scene.”

As emergency crews responded, German Chancellor Merz reaffirmed Berlin’s support for Ukraine and pledged additional aid to strengthen Ukrainian air defenses.

He posted on X: “Ukraine is facing decisive weeks. That is why I visited Kyiv today to convey the message: You can rely on us.”

“Germany’s security also hinges on the war’s outcome. That is why we are assisting, not only out of solidarity but also in our own self-interest.”
