German Federal Criminal Police Record Allies Media in Rising Violent Crimes
Germany’s Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) today disclosed a significant increase in criminal activities targeting the media and journalists in 2025. The authorities logged a total of 486 offenses against the press in the year, marking a critical concern for press freedom and public safety.
According to sources within the BKA, these violent acts highlight a disturbing trend of hostility toward media professionals. Notably, 40 of the offenses involved direct physical aggression, including assault and resistance-related crimes. The data also indicates that ideological motivations played a key role in some incidents.
Breakdown by political spectrum revealed striking disparities: the left-wing movement was responsible for 15 violent cases, primarily involving bodily harm, while the right-wing spectrum accounted for 9 offenders, also predominantly linked to physical attacks. A total of 26 cases were attributed to “foreign ideology,” underlining the international dimensions of these crimes.
Despite efforts to combat these threats, 181 cases could not be clearly categorized under specific ideologies. Among the broader categories, right-wing offenses came in the largest number with 150 incidents, closely followed by foreign ideology-related crimes. Religious ideology accounted for only 10 cases.
The BKA emphasizes urgent action to protect journalists and media organizations from escalating violence. These findings underscore the urgent need for stronger safeguards and continued public awareness.
