German police on manhunt for Berlin Pride attack suspect
German authorities have launched an intensive manhunt for a 21-year-old suspect allegedly involved in a deadly van attack and machete assault near Berlin’s Pride festival on Saturday. The incident left one person dead and at least 29 injured as the vehicle plowed into a crowd in Tiergarten park before crashing into a tree. The suspect, identified only as Ballout, a German citizen with Lebanese heritage, is described by Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt as potentially armed and dangerous, with reported ties to the country’s “Islamist scene.”
Dobrindt emphasized Ballout’s documented law enforcement connections, revealing he had received a suspended prison sentence of 10 months and 1 day for prior offenses. Born in Germany to a mother who became a naturalized citizen in 2002, the suspect previously raised concerns for radicalization and connections to Islamist networks before this incident. Police continue to investigate whether additional charges, including attempted murder, apply following the Saturday-night crime scene analysis.
German officials disclosed that the suspect’s vehicle struck bystanders after reportedly fleeing the initial crash, followed by reported machete attacks causing multiple critical injuries. Emergency services treated victims at the scene, with Berlin’s fire service confirming fatalities and life-threatening conditions among at least three individuals. A fourth victim remained hospitalized in serious condition.
“This constitutes a clear Islamic terror attack,”
stated Dobrindt as authorities searched properties across Berlin, including a Schöneberg district apartment, though the suspect remains at large.
Witness accounts corroborate the violent sequence, with footage showing emergency vehicles surrounding the disabled white van near festival tenting. Organizers abruptly canceled Christopher Street Day events hours ahead of completion, redirecting attendees away from the affected area. Rabiha Hussein, a Berlin resident, described chaotic moments: “The vehicle accelerated without warning, screams erupted—people fled toward my direction.”
