Germany has recorded a new national temperature high of 41.7 °C at the Neißemünde‑Coschen station in the Oder‑Spree district, Brandenburg, according to the German Meteorological Service (DWD).
Meteorologists caution that this figure may still rise later in the day, with a definitive confirmation of the new record expected around 19:00 CET. The current measurement was taken at 15:10 GMT+2.
Recent days have seen a series of record highs across the country, the most recent of which was set on Saturday at Möckern‑Drewitz in Saxony‑Anhalt. The preceding night was also unusually warm, with Kubschütz in Saxony registering 29.4 °C, the highest since records began.
Extreme heat has caused infrastructure damage. Sections of the A2 motorway, including a stretch near Burg in Saxony‑Anhalt that had been closed, have now reopened, while other parts of the highway in Brandenburg and Saxony‑Anhalt remain shut because of carriageway damage. Drivers are urged to avoid the A2 where possible.
In Leipzig, asphalt melted above tram tracks, illustrating the severity of the conditions.
In response, Caritas president Eva‑Maria Welskop‑Deffaa has called for more churches to stay open as cooling centres. Many houses of worship are already accessible, she told Bild, but “there should once again be more of them” to help people escape the heat.
The hot weekend is expected to end with incoming storms on Sunday evening, bringing significantly cooler temperatures on Monday. DWD forecasts maximums of 25‑29 °C for most regions, with locally higher values up to 32 °C possible in the east and south‑east.
