One of golf’s unique aspects is that amateur players can use the same courses and equipment as the world’s elite. While recreational golfers may not drive the ball with the power of Rory McIlroy, they can still custom-fit a TaylorMade Qi4D driver to their exact specifications. Although professionals occasionally use prototype gear unavailable to the public, most equipment, including golf balls, is accessible to all.
However, a professional’s preferred golf ball isn’t necessarily the ideal choice for every amateur. Selecting the right ball depends on various factors, primarily individual preferences concerning spin, flight characteristics, and feel.
Given this emphasis on personalization, it’s notable that the world’s top five golfers each use a different ball. For instance, Scottie Scheffler favors the Titleist Pro V1, known for its lower flight, mid-range spin, and softer feel. Cameron Young opts for the Pro V1x Double Dot, a prototype offering lower spin and flight with a firmer feel, which is not commercially available. Matt Fitzpatrick, conversely, chooses the Titleist Pro V1x for its higher flight, increased spin, and mid-range feel. These three Titleist models alone demonstrate distinct performance profiles.
Turning to TaylorMade, Rory McIlroy plays the TP5, while Collin Morikawa uses the TP5x. The TP5 is engineered for higher spin and a softer feel, contrasting with the TP5x, which prioritizes faster ball speed, greater distance, and a higher launch.
