President John Dramani Mahama says he will champion trade collaboration between Africa and the Caribbean when he reassumes the chairmanship of the African Union (AU) next year.
Ahead of Ghana’s tenure as AU chair, the government has been assessing potential cooperation areas with Africa’s sixth region. Trade has emerged as the most viable avenue for mutual progress, he said.
One priority will be the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), whose protocols have already been signed by most member states. “We now need to deposit the instruments,” he said.
During his August visit to Jamaica, President Mahama discussed the initiative with Prime Minister Andrew Holness. He announced that, once Ghana assumes the AU chair, his administration will work to link the AfCFTA with CARICOM, forging a significantly larger trading bloc.
