Giants broadcaster blasts pitchers for adding Bible verses to Pride Night caps

Longtime Giants broadcaster Mike Krukow sharply criticized four pitchers for writing Bible verses on their Pride Night hats, which displayed the team’s rainbow‑colored logo.

Ryan Walker, Landen Roupp, JT Brubaker and Sam Hentges became the focus of a heated controversy after each added a scriptural reference to his cap during the Giants’ annual LGBTQ+ celebration.

The event, held last Friday, quickly turned contentious as the four players’ actions sparked a backlash from fans and community members.

“When you’re a player in this city, you have a responsibility to understand how sensitive the community is about cultural and religious freedom,” Krukow told KNBR. “They were in for a rude awakening—the reaction came not only from the LGBTQ+ community but from the broader Northern California public that supports it.”

Krukow recalled the franchise’s historic support for LGBTQ+ causes, noting that the Giants were the first MLB team to raise AIDS‑related funds and fly the Pride flag, actions that once drew national criticism.

“It hurts to see the team now criticized despite decades of genuine outreach and support,” he said.

Major League Baseball issued a warning to the pitchers, stating that any writing on caps violates uniform rules. The league emphasized that the warning was procedural and unrelated to the content of the messages.

“We respect players’ right to free expression, but any writing on a uniform is prohibited,” MLB said in a statement.

Walker told the California Post that he anticipated some criticism but was surprised by the scale of the reaction.

“I expected some negative comments, but not this level of intensity,” Walker said. “We stood for what we believe in. I love playing for the Giants and for this city.”

The incident underscores a growing tension between the organization’s long‑standing LGBTQ+ partnerships and the personal convictions of a few of its players.
