Gillespie Slams Umar Gul’s Coaching Dismissal Following Pakistan’s England Tour Upheaval

Former Pakistan Test coach Jason Gillespie has sharply criticized Umar Gul amid the recent coaching upheaval during Pakistan’s tour of England. The remarks follow significant restructuring within the team’s management after disappointing early Test results.

Gillespie made these comments during the Fast Bowling Cartel Podcast alongside Glenn McGrath and Damien Martyn. Pakistan’s innings and 103-run defeat in the first Test at Headingley prompted a major overhaul of both the management and playing squad.

“Give me a spell, Umar. Not surprised you’re not bowling coach anymore, champ. How ridiculous is that?” Gillespie stated.

Gul’s Explanation for Pakistan’s Bowling Struggles

Pakistan dismissed bowling coach Umar Gul and head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed following heavy defeats in the opening two Tests. The Pakistan Cricket Board also sent seven players home, including former captain Salman Ali Agha, as part of the sweeping changes.

Gul attributed Pakistan’s bowling difficulties at Headingley to the cold English weather. He explained that the pacers had traveled from the West Indies, where they were accustomed to hot conditions, and struggled to adapt upon arriving in Yorkshire.

“When we arrived from the West Indies, the weather was hot. It was a hot summer. We didn’t expect it to be this cold. Even the practice match at Croydon was hot. When we reached Headingley, conditions were completely different. It rained and grew cold. Obviously, you need time to adjust to that cold weather. That’s why we couldn’t bowl well or execute our plans due to the conditions,” Gul told reporters after the match.

Gillespie Criticises the Broader Chaos in Pakistan’s Setup

Gillespie expressed frustration over the broader management chaos, highlighting the contradictions in how the board handled the dismissed players and the team’s overall direction during the tour.

“It’s just chaos. The players are used to this, and it’s par for the course. To sack seven players and then ask them to stay and meet the King, because it would be embarrassing for the PCB to have only some players. How can you treat people this way? It makes zero sense,” Gillespie said.

Pakistan will face England in the third and final Test from September 9 to 13 at Edgbaston in Birmingham, with the new coaching setup now in place.
