GitHub Halts Free CD Repository Initiative Amid Online Criticism]

A Microsoft-owned software development platform attracted widespread ridicule and swiftly ended a promotional offer to distribute GitHub repositories on physical CDs, which many interpreted as a jab at Sony’s recent discontinuation of optical media for PlayStation consoles.

The offer, announced via social media last week, required urgent withdrawal by Monday noon Eastern time after generating confusion and negative backlash. GitHub’s parent company initially stated: “In light of recent developments in physical media, GitHub is proud to announce that you can now obtain your public repo on CD-ROM. Keep it. Lend it to friends. Pass it on to your children. Your code is physically yours, forever. Until you lose it, let’s be real. Order yours today.”

The campaign included a link to a Microsoft form requesting GitHub usernames, repository URLs, and shipping addresses for the first 1,000 applicants. The form was taken offline shortly after launch, though the original social media post remained active.

Multiple technology publications, including Tom’s Hardware and Destructoid, identified the promotion as commentary on Sony’s June announcement that PlayStation consoles would cease supporting physical media by 2028. Industry-wide mockery followed, with Nintendo and KFC Spain also participating in social media jokes targeting Sony’s decision.

Critics questioned whether the offer was a genuine promotion or an elaborate troll, noting practical challenges including GitHub’s history of service outages and the technical limitations of CD storage formats. One user highlighted that Google Chrome’s repository exceeds typical CD capacity at 66GB.

Despite the criticism, some commentators defended the concept of physical media, arguing that users should be allowed to prefer tangible formats they can control independently of internet infrastructure.

GitHub did not provide immediate comment on the incident.
