Glamorgan Build 405-Run Lead as Essex Batting Collapses

Glamorgan built a commanding 505 in their first innings, with Asa Tribe reaching 184 and Billy Root contributing 59, before Zaman Akhter’s five-wicket haul reduced Essex to 100 for 7, trailing by 405 runs.

Resuming at 318 for 3 under grey skies, Glamorgan continued their dominance, though they lost some momentum late as Sam Cook claimed two quick wickets. The century partnership between Tribe and Root punished a revolving Essex attack, with spin bearing the brunt of the workload.

Root reached a County Championship half-century in what was effectively his final game, while Essex’s second-innings reply collapsed under pressure from Zain ul Hassan and Raymond Toole. Dean Elgar edged through after being struck on the pads twice, and Paul Walter was soon dismissed for a duck.

Tom Westley enjoyed a brief reprieve before Hassan’s introduction triggered another wave of dismissals. Simon Harmer and Matt Critchley briefly steadied the ship, but Critchley was trapped leg-before by Toole, who finished the day with 2 for 9 from 10.1 overs.
