Gloria Steinem, Iconic Feminist Leader and Trailblazing Journalist, Passes Away at 92

Born on 25 March 1934 in Toledo, Ohio, Gloria Steinem endured a challenging childhood and did not attend school full-time until she was 12 years old.

After completing her university education in the late 1950s, she traveled to India on a research scholarship, where she spent two years working in various capacities. During this time, she assisted village women in organizing non-violent protests against government policies, an experience that ignited her lifelong passion for grassroots activism.

Steinem relocated to New York City in the early 1960s to launch her career as a freelance writer. Her breakthrough came with a widely recognized exposé examining the working conditions of Playboy Bunnies.

She subsequently became a columnist for New York Magazine before co-founding Ms. magazine in 1972, establishing a vital platform for feminist discourse.

Known for her independent stance on personal relationships, Steinem eventually married in 2000, tying the knot with David Bale, a South African-born entrepreneur and environmentalist who was the father of actor Christian Bale. He passed away three years later from brain lymphoma.

In 2013, then-President Barack Obama presented her with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor bestowed in the United States.

Her foundation confirmed that “she continued working for equality until the very end.”

“Gloria’s greatest gift was her ability to listen to others, to make others feel seen and heard. Her words, actions, and example gave people permission to be their truest selves. Gloria lived true to her independent spirit, always with curiosity and a great sense of humour,” the foundation shared.

According to her foundation, Steinem spent her final years in community, writing, and welcoming guests to her home for “Talking Circles”—a meaningful tradition that will continue.

Her dedication to transforming her home into a hub for social justice movements, alongside her forthcoming book “An Unexpected Life,” represents “among many gifts Gloria has given the world with the hope they have ripple effects for generations to come,” the foundation noted.

Following the announcement of her passing on Thursday, tributes poured in across social media, with writers and feminists sharing messages of gratitude on Instagram, many reflecting on how she profoundly shaped their lives.
