General Motors plans to list on the tech‑focused Nasdaq, aiming to lift its valuation, refresh its brand and attract more passive investment. The move mirrors Walmart’s successful 2025 switch, which has boosted its stock price and elevated its forward P/E multiple. GM’s share price rose 5.5 % after the listing change was announced for Nov. 17, followed by a further 2.4 % gain.
The automaker faces a valuation gap, trading at roughly five times forward earnings despite strong cash generation. A $20 billion share‑repurchase program announced with its third‑quarter results failed to impress investors, with shares falling 7 % on concerns about costs and pricing pressure. However, GM’s cash‑flow forecast for 2026 was revised upward to $11.5‑$12.5 billion, and the company highlighted two high‑margin digital businesses—onStar and its Super Cruise autonomous‑driving platform—that generated $6.8 billion in deferred revenue in Q3, up 40 % year‑over‑year and boasting gross margins near 70 %.
The Nasdaq listing would make GM eligible for the Nasdaq‑100 index, a move that historically adds about 1 % excess return and draws passive capital. Barclays analyst Dan Levy sees GM as a strong candidate for the index’s December reconstitution, which could create a more “sticky” shareholder base.
Walmart’s experience since its own Nasdaq switch in late 2025 shows a stock gain of roughly 11 % and a rise in its forward P/E to an average of 39× from 23× before, underscoring the valuation boost that index inclusion can provide.
GM is also using its transition to signal a broader shift toward electrification and autonomous technology, offering hybrid models as a bridge for customers uneasy with a fully electric future.
