Golden Eagle Luxury Trains has announced a refreshed version of its flagship European tour, the Balkan Explorer.
The 12‑day itinerary aboard the Golden Eagle Danube Express connects Venice with Istanbul, passing through Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Bulgaria and Turkey.
Reflecting a growing desire to explore beyond Europe’s classic capitals, the updated route blends renowned cities with lesser‑known cultural and natural attractions. The journey opens with a two‑night stay in Venice, before the private train departs eastward via Trieste and into Slovenia.
A highlight of the new schedule is an exclusive after‑hours visit to the Postojna Cave system, enabling guests to experience one of Europe’s largest karst cave networks outside peak hours.
The train then sails along Croatia’s Adriatic coast, making fresh stops at Pula and Rijeka before moving inland toward Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The revised itinerary dedicates more time to Sarajevo and Mostar, allowing travelers to delve deeper into the region’s complex history, Ottoman heritage, and dramatic mountain scenery.
An overnight hotel stay in Belgrade has also been added, giving guests an opportunity to explore the Serbian capital before continuing through Sofia and Plovdiv toward Istanbul.
Throughout the trip, passengers travel aboard the Golden Eagle Danube Express, where en‑suite cabins, a restaurant car serving regional cuisine, and a bar lounge car capture the elegance of classic European luxury rail travel.
Off‑train excursions – ranging from guided city tours and cultural performances to exclusive visits to historic landmarks outside regular opening hours – are included throughout the itinerary.
The Balkan Explorer runs on select dates throughout the year. Upcoming departures are scheduled for 2 October 2026, 7 May, 10 September and 19 October 2027. Prices start at €21,100 for a twin room in Deluxe Class for the October 2026 departure, rising to €23,600 for 2027, with Superior Deluxe Class also available.
The fare covers two hotel nights in Venice, a night in Belgrade, a hotel stay in Istanbul, seven nights aboard the train, all meals, drinks while on board, excursions, transfers and gratuities.
The Balkan Explorer is one of several luxury European rail tours operated by the Golden Eagle Danube Express.
Other routes include the eight‑day Paris to Istanbul journey, which crosses several European countries – Austria, Slovenia, Serbia and Bulgaria – before arriving in Turkey, as well as the 11‑day Grand Alpine Express linking Budapest and Venice through Hungary, Austria, Switzerland, Slovenia and northern Italy.
