According to Goldman Sachs, equity investors remain skeptical about Chinese firms’ rapid overseas expansion.
Trina Chen, co‑head of Greater China equity research at Goldman Sachs, noted on a recent podcast that the market seeks profitable expansion opportunities.
Weak domestic consumer demand has prompted Chinese firms—including electric‑vehicle manufacturers—to accelerate overseas expansion. Geely, for example, announced on Friday that it will enter the Canadian market next year.
Chen and her team forecast that Chinese companies’ overseas market share will rise to roughly 31% by 2035, up from about 18%, according to a September 14 report covering over ten sectors, such as express delivery, industrial robots, and white‑goods appliances like air conditioners.
Chinese firms typically enjoy higher profit margins abroad than at home, allowing them to price their offerings lower than domestic competitors.
Investors must be assured that overseas expansion avoids a “involution” scenario—intense price competition that erodes margins—Chen said Tuesday, while geopolitical factors and market‑access restrictions also affect stock performance.
Involution denotes cut‑throat, price‑driven competition in China, a phenomenon regulators have recently sought to curb.
This uncertainty means that the potential of overseas expansion is not yet fully reflected in the valuations of Chinese companies, Chen observed.
Conversely, Chen warned that investors can be ruthless when incumbent firms lose market share; a 10% to 15% decline could reduce market capitalization by 50% to 80%.
Chinese companies are targeting more than just the U.S. and Europe; Goldman Sachs noted that rapid growth is occurring in emerging markets where competition is limited.
Euromonitor noted that Chinese brands have evolved beyond mere challengers, becoming entrenched competitors that can reshape market dynamics in regions such as Latin America.
