As smoke from hundreds of burning wildfires spread across Canada and the United States, the first three operational satellites in the Google-backed FireSat program successfully launched into orbit. The satellites will begin providing wildfire detection capable of identifying even minor blazes in the United States, Australia, and Europe before year-end.

The launch of microsatellites aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California on July 7, 2026, signifies entry into “initial operational capability” for the FireSat constellation, managed by the nonprofit Earth Fire Alliance. Following a three-month testing phase, the satellites will commence active data delivery to fire agencies while surveilling all fire-prone regions globally at least twice daily.

FireSat marks the first satellite array dedicated to wildfire detection, including identifying smaller fires overlooked by conventional satellites. Developed by California-based Muon Space, the system received over $15 million from Google to support initial deployment, alongside $26 million from the Bezos Earth Fund.

The Future of Wildfire Detection

Initial “early adapter” users, including fire agencies in California, Colorado, Australia, and Portugal, will utilize FireSat data this year. As additional satellites launch, the program aims to deliver real-time imagery globally hourly by 2029—eventually scaling to refresh every 20 minutes once the full array of over 50 satellites becomes operational by the early 2030s.
