Smart home owners will soon be able to control their Google Home-connected devices through AI agents. On Tuesday, Google introduced early access to its Model Context Protocol (MCP) server for the Google Home ecosystem, enabling any MCP-compatible AI agent — including Claude, Hermes, OpenClaw, ChatGPT, and Google Antigravity — to securely interact with smart home devices and access their event history.

This update allows users to issue natural language commands to review camera summaries, monitor smart home activity, control connected devices, and build custom smart home dashboards.

To set up the connection, users must create a Google Cloud project and configure it for Home MCP. They then provide the MCP configuration details to their chosen AI agent, which will prompt them to sign in and grant the necessary permissions. A setup guide is also available in the Google Home Developer Center.

The system supports any device within the Google Home ecosystem, including Google Nest doorbells, thermostats, and “Works with Google Home” (or Matter) devices such as light bulbs.

Google already incorporates MCP across other areas of its business, including Google Cloud, data platforms, developer tools, and Google Workspace. The Google Home integration, however, is more directly aimed at consumers who are exploring AI agents for everyday tasks.

The company said MCP access will begin rolling out today and continue over the coming weeks to subscribers of Google Home Premium Advanced in the United States. This premium tier costs $20 per month and offers features such as extended event-based video history, descriptive notifications, detailed alerts, video history search tools, and daily summaries.

Google did not comment on whether or when MCP support would expand to other subscription tiers or markets.

The company is also gathering feedback from early adopters through its Smart Home for Developers Community.
