Bluetooth connectivity issues often provide little insight into their root cause. Earbuds may show as connected without playing audio, cars might stream music while rejecting hands-free calls, or wearables could repeatedly disconnect without explanation. These problems can leave users frustrated and unsure where to begin troubleshooting.

To address this challenge, Google has introduced Bluetooth Diagnostics for Pixel device owners, offering structured guidance for identifying and resolving common Bluetooth failures before attempting more drastic measures like forgetting devices or performing factory resets.

This feature is currently available on Pixel 6 and newer models, including Fold devices, providing users with a straightforward way to diagnose Bluetooth-related issues directly from their phones.

Understanding What Pixel’s Bluetooth Diagnostics Assesses

Bluetooth failures often manifest in specific, isolated ways. For instance, audio streaming might function perfectly while voice calls fail, or a phone may detect a vehicle normally yet Android Auto remains unresponsive. Without proper diagnostics, users might waste time addressing symptoms rather than underlying issues.

Pixel’s Bluetooth Diagnostics simplifies this process by offering dedicated tests for media audio, call functionality, and other connection aspects. During testing on a Pixel 8 Pro, the tool was easily accessible through Settings > Connected devices, where users can select specific accessories and run targeted diagnostics.

Vehicle connections present unique challenges due to their reliance on multiple wireless protocols. Wireless Android Auto, for example, utilizes both Bluetooth for initial pairing and hands-free communication, alongside Wi-Fi for high-bandwidth data transfer. This dual-protocol approach means that even if Bluetooth functions correctly, Android Auto might still encounter issues related to Wi-Fi or other system components.

While Google’s implementation brings valuable diagnostic capabilities to Pixel users, it’s worth noting that Samsung Galaxy device owners already have access to similar tools through Samsung Members, which includes both individual component tests and comprehensive system-wide diagnostics.

How to Access and Use Bluetooth Diagnostics

The diagnostic process follows a simple workflow:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Connected devices.
  3. Open Bluetooth diagnostics.
  4. Choose the accessory and follow the on-screen tests.

While Bluetooth Diagnostics provides valuable insights into connection quality, it has limitations. The tool cannot repair hardware defects such as damaged earbuds, resolve firmware issues in third-party accessories, or establish compatibility between fundamentally incompatible devices.

Google’s official Bluetooth troubleshooting recommendations remain relevant even with diagnostic tools available. Basic steps including toggling Bluetooth connections, verifying pairing status, restarting devices, and re-pairing accessories should still be considered before pursuing more extensive solutions like factory resets.

Additionally, users should be aware of privacy considerations when using Bluetooth Diagnostics. Opting to share diagnostic data with Google may include accessory specifications, connection test results, and hardware performance metrics. Optional bug reports can also contain detailed technical logs including Bluetooth HCI snoop data, device identifiers, and LE Audio interaction records.
