Although a weekend of regular‑season matches remains on the NWSL schedule, several teams will enter postseason mode a week early on Sunday, with crucial storylines at stake on Decision Day.

Gotham FC and Seattle Reign each control their own destiny, but their objectives differ. Gotham aims to secure its first NWSL Shield against Utah Royals, while the Reign must defeat Orlando Pride to guarantee a play‑off berth.

The Reign’s win would lock their post‑season spot, but if they stumble, North Carolina Courage and Denver Summit—both close in the standings—could overtake them when they face each other on Sunday.

Gotham, San Diego Wave battle for the Shield

Gotham have been the league’s top team for months, holding a seven‑point lead in late summer. Despite recent inconsistencies, they remain in first place with a three‑point cushion over the San Diego Wave. A draw versus the Utah Royals would clinch the Shield for Gotham, regardless of the Wave’s result at Bay FC.

The bigger question for Gotham is whether star attackers Jaedyn Shaw and Rose Lavelle will be available. Both missed last week’s win over Orlando and Shaw also sat out a loss to Washington. Shaw and Lavelle combine for 22 goal contributions this season; Gotham’s attack weakens noticeably when Shaw is absent. The defending Shield winners will face a Utah Royals side that enters the playoffs with a modest defensive record.

Three teams, one playoff spot

Seven of the eight playoff spots are already filled, leaving only the final berth up for grabs. Seattle Reign currently occupies eighth place with 42 points; a victory over Orlando guarantees their post‑season appearance. If Seattle drops points, North Carolina Courage and Denver Summit—both within two points—could squeeze in when they meet on Sunday. The Courage need a win and hope Seattle fails, while Denver must win and also rely on Seattle’s loss to secure a historic play‑off run as an expansion franchise.

The Reign’s path appears simplest, backed by a defense that has allowed just 33 goals despite a high expected‑goals tally. Their opponents, however, bring their own strengths. Denver’s form surge is led by Lindsey Heaps, who has contributed seven goals and three assists since her midseason arrival. Meanwhile, the Courage’s offensive engine hinges on Ashley Sanchez, whose recent left‑wing shift has been transformative.

Ashley Sanchez chases NWSL history

Sanchez is on pace for a record‑breaking season with 20 goals already logged. Scoring against Denver would set a new single‑season goalscoring mark, while either a goal or an assist would also break Temwa Chawinga’s single‑season contribution record. Her left‑wing play has not only revived her national‑team prospects but also propelled the Courage toward the playoff line. Sanchez accounts for roughly half of the team’s goals this year, yet the side’s defensive vulnerabilities—ranked among the league’s bottom six for goals conceded—threaten to derail their postseason hopes despite her individual brilliance.
