ISLAMABAD: The government, under Communications Minister Abdul Aleem Khan, approved a 70km extension of the Murree Expressway (N-75) to Muzaffarabad during a National Highway Authority (NHA) meeting. This decision aims to enhance regional connectivity by integrating Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) with Pakistan’s primary motorway network.
The extension will provide residents of AJK with a modern, safer high-speed travel option, aligning the region with the country’s infrastructure standards. Khan highlighted this initiative as part of efforts to ensure equal access to high-quality motorway facilities nationwide.
During the meeting, Khan directed the NHA to prioritize the completion of 25 key projects, including the M-8 Motorway, Hoshab–Awaran Road, and Awaran–Nal corridor, to boost trade with Iran and foster regional tourism.
A notable focus was placed on improving the NHA’s financial sustainability. The minister outlined plans to restructure the authority to generate approximately Rs400 billion annually through internal revenue, reducing reliance on federal funding.
The news comes amid recent safety concerns. The NHMP reported a severe accident earlier this month, where a van caught fire in a nullah, resulting in 10 fatalities and 13 injuries. These incidents underscore the need for continued infrastructure upgrades.
