Government Introduces Annual Judicial Performance Evaluation Mechanism for First Time]

LAHORE: Federal Minister for Law and Justice Senator Azam Nazeer Tarar announced the government’s introduction of a constitutional mechanism for annual evaluation of judges’ performance through a seven-member judges evaluation committee.

The committee, established to ensure transparency and merit in high court appointments, will interview candidates before forwarding recommendations to the Judicial Commission of Pakistan.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Lawyers Education Academy and a certificate distribution ceremony for Bar Vocational Course graduates at the Punjab Bar Council, Minister Tarar addressed constitutional reforms.

Regarding constitutional changes, he stated that the 28th constitutional amendment is not under immediate consideration, and any future amendments would require consultation with all political parties.

Minister Tarar highlighted ongoing initiatives including a comprehensive health insurance policy for lawyers and their families, covering major illnesses such as cancer, kidney, liver, and heart diseases at both public and private hospitals.

He also announced a Rs20 million grant for the Bar Vocational Course, noting that Punjab has already allocated Rs1.35 billion to bar associations.

The event was attended by Judicial Commission of Pakistan member Ahsan Bhoon, Pakistan Bar Council vice chairman Pir Masood Chishti, and Punjab Bar Council vice chairman Khawaja Qaiser Butt, among others.
