Governor Gavin Newsom Claims DOJ Probe is Politically Motivated Attack Ahead of 2028 Ambitions

Newsom alleges he and his wife are being targeted due to his potential 2028 presidential bid; the DOJ has yet to verify the claims.

California Governor Gavin Newsom, a prominent Democratic leader and sharp critic of President Donald Trump, has revealed that he is the subject of a U.S. Department of Justice investigation.

In a video shared on X this Monday, Newsom characterized the probe as a politically charged effort, claiming he is being targeted because of his potential presidential aspirations for 2028. He further noted that the DOJ investigation extends to his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom.

While the Department of Justice has not officially confirmed the existence of the probe, Newsom asserted that he and his wife have “nothing to hide” and that no evidence of criminal activity has been discovered.

“Today, my wife & I joined Donald Trump’s hit list,” Newsom stated in the post. “He isn’t coming after me because of mean tweets, but because I am considering running for President.”

The governor alleged that federal agents have been attempting to interview his former employees and associates, arguing that the DOJ is not investigating a known crime but is instead “trying to find one.” He specifically mentioned the focus on Jennifer Siebel Newsom, who leads a non-profit dedicated to gender equality.

Newsom denounced Trump as “the most corrupt president in American history” and accused the DOJ, currently led by Trump ally Todd Blanche, of “abusing the grand jury process” to manufacture a case against him.

A Pattern of Retribution

President Trump has frequently pledged to pursue legal action against his political adversaries. Since assuming office in 2025, the Department of Justice has targeted several high-profile critics, including New York Attorney General Letitia James and former FBI Director James Comey—both of whom had previously investigated the president.

Other targets of DOJ scrutiny include U.S. Senator Adam Schiff, who presided over Trump’s first impeachment, and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, the 2024 Democratic vice presidential nominee.

The tension between the two leaders has played out prominently on social media, where Trump frequently disparages Newsom, often using the derogatory nickname “Newscum.” Last June, the president suggested that Newsom should be arrested following a dispute over immigration enforcement protests in California.

Newsom, who is scheduled to leave office in January 2027 due to term limits, has mirrored this aggressive tone. Most recently, he mocked the president’s 80th birthday by posting a montage of Trump appearing to sleep during public events, captioning it, “80 is the new 100.”
