Guenther Steiner Outlines Specific Requirements for Potential F1 Comeback

Former Haas Formula 1 Team Principal Guenther Steiner has expressed his willingness to return to the pinnacle of motorsport, but only if offered a meaningful “project.”

Steiner, who rose to global prominence as a charismatic figure in Netflix’s Drive to Survive, stepped down from his role at Haas in January 2024. Since his departure, the 61-year-old has maintained a high profile as a television pundit, a frequent guest on The Red Flags Podcast, and a stakeholder in the Red Bull KTM Tech3 MotoGP team.

Speaking on the Up To Speed podcast alongside hosts Jolie Sharpe and F1 legend David Coulthard, Steiner confirmed that a return to the paddock is a possibility under the right circumstances.

“I would come back if there is a project I like,” Steiner remarked. “I have always been driven by projects over the last two decades. I don’t seek out roles simply for the sake of having a job; while that isn’t necessarily boring, it lacks the necessary excitement. I need something that truly challenges me.”

“To clarify, a ‘project’ means something I can actively shape. I don’t live by job titles—I couldn’t care less about them. For me, it is about the work itself and doing something I am passionate about.”

Steiner also took a moment to humorously reflect on his recent foray into broadcasting, noting that his motivation was to match the skill level of his co-host.

“After leaving F1, I moved into television, an industry I wasn’t even aware of previously,” he joked. “I accepted the offer because I wanted to become as good as David. I haven’t reached that level yet, though. Honestly, I think starting an F1 team was easier than becoming as talented as David on camera!”
