At least 30 people died when a massive pile of trash gave way at Guinea’s largest landfill in Conakry after heavy overnight rains, officials reported.

The slide occurred just after 2 a.m. (02:00 GMT) on Sunday at the Dar es Salam open‑air dump, sending a torrent of waste onto nearby shanties.

Rescue crews sifted through the debris looking for survivors while six critically injured victims were rushed to hospital and several homes were destroyed.

The city’s primary dump, serving roughly two million residents, had been slated for closure on the same day, authorities said.

Although eviction notices had been issued, many families remained on site when the collapse struck. “We will make sure the remaining households are relocated elsewhere,” declared Territorial Administration Minister Dienabou Toure, who was present at the scene.

Despite possessing immense mineral resources—including the world’s largest bauxite reserves—Guinea remains among West Africa’s poorest nations, with nearly half of its population living below the national poverty line.
