A gunman opened fire outside a high school in western Turkey on Tuesday, wounding eight people, and was detained shortly afterwards, the local governor’s office said.
The suspect, who opened fire at around 7:59 am in Turgutlu, an area west of the resort city of Izmir, was detained by security forces following the attack, the governor’s office said in a statement.
The attack took place around 8 am local time in the Turgutlu district in the Manisa province, the private NTV broadcaster reported.
One of the wounded is in serious condition, it said.
Authorities reported that the suspect opened fire for unknown reasons before fleeing the scene.
Police and medical teams responded to the location, with security around the school subsequently increased.
This incident represents the latest in a series of school shootings in Turkey.
In April, a 14-year-old individual opened fire at a school in Kahramanmaraş province, resulting in the deaths of nine students aged 10 and 11, along with one teacher. The youth perpetrator died at the scene.
In a separate event in the southeastern province of Şanlıurfa, a former student opened fire at his previous high school, wounding 16 individuals before taking his own life when confronted by police.
These incidents have triggered widespread public outrage. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has dismissed a deputy education minister and announced that the government will implement additional measures, including restrictions on firearms possession.
