Gunman Opens Fire on U.S. Consulate in Toronto, Marking Second Attack This Year

A gunman opened fire at the U.S. Consulate in Toronto on Monday, marking the second such attack on the building this year, according to authorities.

A single shell casing was recovered at the scene, and the building’s facade sustained damage.

No injuries were reported.

Toronto Deputy Police Chief Frank Barredo said a high‑speed chase followed the shooting, lasting about an hour, though no arrests were made and the investigation will continue in search of those involved.

“We will approach this investigation with great seriousness,” Barredo said at a press conference. “We will bring those responsible to justice.”

Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow called the shooting a “brazen attack.”

“I want to tell the person or persons responsible that we will find you,” she said.

This marked the second shooting targeting the U.S. Consulate this year; the first occurred on March 10, when two suspects allegedly opened fire on the building before fleeing in a stolen vehicle.

Sheldon Tracy‑Stewart, 18, and Zara Jabbi, 19, were arrested last month and charged with multiple offenses related to the March shooting; the charges have yet to be adjudicated in court.

A police presence has been maintained at the consulate since the first shooting.

Barredo said a patrol vehicle was stationed outside the consulate with its lights activated at the time of the shooting, and two security personnel were inside the building.

Last month, police indicated they believed several shootings, including the March incident, could be linked to a “multilayered” gun‑for‑hire network that has also targeted Toronto synagogues.

Two popular Jewish‑owned bakeries were targeted by gunfire over the weekend.

Barredo said police have not ruled out a connection between Monday’s consulate shooting and the bakery attacks, and the motive remains under investigation.

“Investigators will follow the evidence wherever it leads,” he said.

Doug Ford, the premier of Ontario, said he was “disgusted” by the recent violence in Toronto.

“I’m totally disgusted by the shootings and vandalism that occurred in Toronto over the past few days, including at two Jewish‑owned businesses over the weekend and near the U.S. Consulate this morning,” he said on X. “In all cases, active police investigations are underway. I expect those responsible to be found, prosecuted and punished to the fullest extent of the law.”
