GWADAR: In a significant step toward expanding its maritime service capabilities, Gwadar Port has successfully completed its first commercial bunkering operation.
The refueling mission took place from July 9 to July 11, executed through a strategic collaboration between the Gwadar Port Authority (GPA), the National Logistics Cell (NLC), Gwadar International Terminals Limited (GITL), and the global energy leader Vitol Asia.
The operation involved the LNG carrier Enugu—a joint venture between QatarEnergy, Abu Dhabi National Oil Company, and Vitol—which received 2,500 metric tonnes of very low sulphur fuel oil (VLSFO) while docked at Gwadar Port.
The refueling of the 285.4-meter vessel was facilitated by the bunker barge Marine Ista.
The successful and efficient completion of the task was supported by Pakistan Customs, port authorities, and the local shipping agent, Pak Traders Gwadar.
This milestone broadens the scope of services offered at Gwadar Port, enabling it to provide comprehensive marine services and bunkering to international vessels alongside its existing cargo handling operations.
Strengthening the Blue Economy
Industry experts suggest that this development is poised to generate new streams of foreign exchange and revenue, while simultaneously enhancing Gwadar Port’s competitiveness in attracting international shipping lines.
This achievement is a key component of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) framework, which aims to establish Gwadar as a vital regional hub for energy and trade.
Port officials confirmed that this event marks the official commencement of commercial bunkering services in the region. Moving forward, an increase in international vessel refueling is expected, which is anticipated to provide a substantial boost to Pakistan’s blue economy, logistics sector, marine services, and local employment.
