PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti – A former ambassador and member of Haiti’s dissolved transitional presidential council appeared in court for an interview with a judge on Monday to address corruption charges.
Smith Augustin met privately with a judge investigating allegations that he and two other former council members solicited over $750,000 from the director of the state-owned National Bank of Credit to obtain his position.
The allegations against Augustin, Emmanuel Vertilaire, and Louis Gérald Gilles were disclosed in October 2024 by an anti-corruption agency in a damning report.
Augustin declined to comment to the media, but his lawyer, Mario Delcy, stated that the meeting proceeded smoothly and that Augustin remains available for further questioning.
The Unit for Combating Corruption noted that all four individuals face criminal charges of bribery and corruption, though they have denied the accusations.
Augustin previously held the position of Haitian ambassador to the Dominican Republic, while Gilles is a former senator and Vertilaire a former investigative judge.
