Seven-time Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton has earned widespread acclaim for his glowing assessment of Fernando Alonso following the Spaniard’s contract extension with Aston Martin.
Ahead of the Bahrain Grand Prix, the two-time champion committed his future to the Silverstone-based squad through at least the end of the 2027 season. The announcement naturally dominated paddock discussions at the Sakhir circuit, prompting reactions from across the grid.
The new deal will see Alonso competing at the age of 46. “There are a lot of drivers at the front who can’t compete with Fernando in pure talent,” Hamilton told media in Bahrain. “He’s just not able to show that at the moment.”
The Ferrari driver’s remarks quickly gained traction online. “Game recognises game,” wrote one fan on Reddit, while another noted: “I like it when they occasionally say nice things about each other.”
“Heartwarming to see the veterans getting along,” another user joked, referencing the pair’s storied history as former McLaren teammates. “Ferwis is alive and kicking. Last year grandpa defended unc when he was struggling in red. Now unc is defending grandpa.”
Commenters on an Autosport Instagram post echoed the sentiment: “Lewis proving why he is a legend…” and “I hope Aston can right the ship for Fernando so he can fight for points again.”
Alonso made his F1 debut at the 2001 Australian Grand Prix and has since started 440 grands prix. His career résumé includes world championships in 2005 and 2006, 32 race victories, 106 podium finishes, and 22 pole positions. He has raced for Minardi, Renault, McLaren, Ferrari, Alpine, and now Aston Martin.
The Silverstone outfit has faced a challenging start to the 2025 campaign, grappling with car performance and power unit reliability. The team currently sits tenth in the constructors’ championship with three points.
