Peter Handscomb has been named in the Australia A squad for the upcoming four-day fixtures against India A, signaling his potential inclusion in the Border-Gavaskar Test series early next year.
The 35-year-old, who last played Test cricket during Australia’s 2023 tour of India, remains one of the most reliable performers in domestic cricket. As the leading run-scorer in last season’s Sheffield Shield with 724 runs at 34.47, Handscomb continues to demonstrate his value as an astute player of spin bowling. While he’s acknowledged his ability to adapt to various conditions, he has consistently emphasized his desire not to be limited by specific playing environments.
The selection panel has strategically combined emerging talent with seasoned experience across the Australia A squads. Rising stars Nathan McSweeney and Sam Konstas feature in both the four-day and one-day components of the tour, while Victoria’s left-handed batsman Campbell Kellaway joins the red-ball contingent.
McSweeney’s presence in the 50-over squad implies he may not be immediately considered for Test selection. Meanwhile, Jake Weatherald’s omission from the A squad follows his loss of Test position during the recent Bangladesh series. Selectors’ chair George Bailey clarified that the decision provides Weatherald with additional time to integrate technical adjustments made during the off-season.
“Sometimes changes can be implemented quickly and seamlessly, and other times they present greater challenges,” Bailey noted. “We’ve been transparent with Jake – this isn’t the end of his journey. His natural style of play has many strengths, but we believe giving him space to fully embed these modifications will help bridge the gap between training and match performance.”
Left-arm orthodox spinner Matt Kuhnemann, expected to feature in the India Test tour, has been omitted from both the A and ODI squads.
Victoria wicketkeeper Sam Harper receives recognition for his standout Sheffield Shield season, particularly his influential performances after being elevated to open the batting. His productive off-season across various franchise competitions has strengthened his credentials, though he’s not included in the limited-overs squad.
Western Australia fast bowler Mahli Beardman, who made his T20I debut against Pakistan in January before recovering from a stress fracture, earns a place in the one-day squad bound for India.
“This tour forms a vital component of our performance strategy and player development in sub-continental conditions,” Bailey stated. “It aligns with our ongoing commitment to the Australia A program and showcases players who remain under consideration for selection in next year’s India tour or represent future possibilities.”
Players participating in the one-day segment will miss the opening round of the Sheffield Shield. The four-day matches are scheduled in Puducherry from September 22 to 25 and September 29 to October 2, while the one-day fixtures will be played on October 6, 9, and 11 at the same venue.
