Chinese authorities have detained a local government official and a businessman on suspicion of sexually assaulting a woman at a business gathering, prompting widespread public outrage.
The alleged assault took place at a karaoke bar in Hangzhou following an official dinner attended by corporate executives and government officials.
The investigation revealed that both men sexually assaulted the woman, with one pushing her to the ground and causing injuries to her lower back, according to local authorities.
Both suspects have been dismissed from their positions, the statement said.
While sexual misconduct at workplace drink events is not new in China, arrests involving public officials remain relatively rare.
The severity of the victim’s injuries and the alleged involvement of a senior official and a state‑owned enterprise executive have intensified public anger over perceived abuse of power within hierarchical business environments.
The case has surged on Chinese social media, appearing among Weibo’s top 50 trending topics on Wednesday.
Authorities’ release of investigation findings further amplified public interest.
One related discussion garnered over 68 million views, with several others attracting between one and six million views.
As one Weibo user commented, “Attending a drinks gathering does not imply consent to be harmed, and consuming alcohol does not justify abuse.”
Many netizens have highlighted China’s “drinking table culture,” noting that the woman was reportedly pressured to consume large amounts of alcohol before being taken to the karaoke venue.
Another comment questioned, “What justification exists for requiring women to drink with men? It is hoped this practice can be eradicated.”
A commentary in China Women’s News argued that addressing only the individuals would be insufficient.
The piece called for clear institutional definitions of business interaction boundaries to eliminate gray zones where authority intertwines with social obligations.
