Hansi Flick Provides Gavi Injury Update, Weighs In on Number 9 and Balde’s Future

FC Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick provided an update on Gavi’s injury and addressed the club’s number 9 position following a dominant 5-0 away victory against Elche to open the season.

Furthermore, the German manager commented on the future of Alejandro Balde amidst speculation regarding his potential departure from the club.

Starting alongside Marc Bernal, Gavi was forced to depart the pitch before the half-hour mark, with Pedri entering the match as his replacement.

The Barcelona faithful expressed notable concern after the Spain international was seen clutching his right knee—an area that has previously undergone two surgeries, keeping him sidelined for extended periods.

In his post-match press conference, Flick offered cautious optimism regarding the midfielder’s condition. “We have to wait to see about the blow he received on his right knee. But it seems that he was better [after the match]. We will have a look, an MRI will have to be done,” the coach stated.

With Raphinha netting a brace and providing an assist, and other attacking options like Karim Adeyemi and Anthony Gordon capable of leading the line, the question remains whether Barcelona needs to pursue a striker such as Julian Alvarez.

“We’ll have to talk to Deco. We have to do what’s best and it’s going to be next week,” Flick commented. “We are happy with the fantastic start we have had, it gives us confidence. I’m happy with the 5-0 and the three points.”

On the performance of captain Raphinha, Flick added: “Rafa is the player who for me is a good example of intensity… When he does it, the rest follow him. That’s a captain. He’s a captain.”

Despite reports suggesting the defender has decided to leave, Barcelona omitted Balde from the squad list for the Elche match, which many interpreted as a sign that the La Masia product is bound for pastures new.

However, Flick clarified that the omission was a mutual decision for the player to clear his mind. “No, I’m not asking him to leave. This morning I felt there was something wrong with him. I spoke to him and said: ‘At this moment, I have this feeling, and I think it’s best for you to clear your mind, sort out your thoughts, and then we’ll talk again tomorrow.’ And he agreed as well. He agreed to it because there are so many things going around in his head, and that’s why he’s not here,” the coach explained.

FC Barcelona are next in action on Thursday, when they host Athletic Club at the Spotify Camp Nou.
