General Manager Joe Schoen indicated this week that the Giants anticipate Malik Nabers will be ready for the season opener on September 13. However, Coach John Harbaugh offered a more cautious outlook, describing his stance as “hopeful” but non-committal regarding the wide receiver’s return schedule.
Nabers missed the Giants’ mandatory minicamp as he continues rehabilitation from a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), which necessitated a second surgical procedure to address scar tissue buildup.
“He mentioned his intention to be present here consistently, almost all the time,” Harbaugh stated Wednesday, as reported by ESPN’s Jordan Raanan. “I don’t foresee him being here every moment. He’ll be here frequently, putting in significant effort. He’s showing solid advancement at present. I’m very hopeful he’ll return shortly.”
The coach further clarified that Nabers’ recovery trajectory from knee surgery will involve a gradual rebuild to peak performance.
“When returning from knee surgery, he’ll regain functionality but will still require time to regain full strength,” Harbaugh added. “However, he’s performing exceptionally well. He’s dedicated and making substantial progress over recent weeks.”
Nabers sustained the ACL tear during Week 4 of the 2023 season against the Los Angeles Chargers and underwent initial surgery on October 28. The follow-up procedure this offseason aimed to resolve lingering stiffness.
Harbaugh characterized Nabers’ injury as “complex,” noting the prolonged nature of the recovery.
“This process is a grind; it demands sustained effort,” Harbaugh remarked. “He’s currently roughly two-thirds through his rehabilitation, though I may say 70 or 80 percent. He’s enduring the hardship of rebuilding strength, which will persist once play resumes.”
Analysts suggest Nabers is likely to commence the season on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list while continuing off-field rehab.
