The widely discussed trade proposal involving Hardik Pandya and Yashasvi Jaiswal between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) has reportedly lost momentum ahead of the IPL 2027 auction. The potential swap, which would have sent Mumbai’s captain to Rajasthan in exchange for the prolific young opener, garnered significant attention across the cricketing fraternity. However, recent reports indicate the two franchises are no longer engaged in active negotiations.
While the discussions were substantive and took place several months ago, they failed to yield meaningful progress, rendering the blockbuster move unlikely at this stage. With the IPL retention deadline looming on November 15, the situation warrants monitoring, though neither franchise has officially confirmed a deal.
Why Did the Hardik Pandya-Yashasvi Jaiswal Trade Stall?
MI and RR explored the potential swap, but the talks did not advance significantly. The franchises are not currently negotiating the proposed deal.
A primary factor is the distinct value each player brings to their respective side. Pandya is a proven all-rounder providing seam bowling, power-hitting, and leadership, while Jaiswal is an established India opener capable of anchoring Rajasthan’s batting line-up for years to come.
A transaction involving two high-profile assets demands satisfaction on both cricketing and financial fronts. Although the specific reasons for the impasse remain undisclosed, the lack of advancement suggests an agreement was difficult to structure.
Why Rajasthan Royals Might Consider Moving Yashasvi Jaiswal
From Rajasthan’s perspective, Pandya would add a seam-bowling all-rounder capable of contributing in the middle order while bringing invaluable leadership experience.
The Royals have already undertaken a significant squad restructure following the trade of former captain Sanju Samson to Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in exchange for Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran. Moving Jaiswal would represent a further reshaping of their core group.
However, Rajasthan possess another left-handed opening option in South African batter Lhuan-dre Pretorius, who has been with the franchise for two seasons despite limited IPL opportunities. Pretorius impressed during the 2026 Major League Cricket (MLC) season, amassing 465 runs at a strike rate exceeding 176. While his form provides a potential alternative, it does not automatically render Jaiswal expendable.
Why Mumbai Indians Might Hesitate to Release Hardik Pandya
Pandya remains a linchpin for Mumbai Indians due to his three-dimensional impact: batting, bowling, and leadership. Replacing such a profile is notoriously difficult, even if a talented batter arrives in return.
Jaiswal would undoubtedly strengthen Mumbai’s top order and offer a long-term batting solution. However, trading Pandya would force the five-time champions to reassess their all-rounder balance and captaincy succession plans.
Speculation has also surrounded a potential return of Rohit Sharma to the captaincy. Current reports suggest the franchise has not yet addressed the leadership question, preferring to finalise its coaching setup first.
Will the Trade Materialise Before the IPL 2027 Retention Deadline?
For the moment, the Pandya-Jaiswal swap appears improbable. The franchises held preliminary discussions, but active negotiations have ceased, and Jaiswal remains contracted to Rajasthan Royals for at least one more season.
The November 15 retention deadline may provide greater clarity on franchise strategies, though there is no guarantee talks will resume. Both teams must carefully evaluate their squad requirements before committing to a deal of this magnitude.
