Hardy’s Lawsuit Scrutinizes Who Approved Serrano Rematch

Former featherweight champion Heather Hardy is seeking more than $10 million from Jake Paul, Most Valuable Promotions, Bryce Holden and Holden Boxing, alleging that her August 2023 rematch with Amanda Serrano caused a permanent brain injury and ended her career. The claims have yet to be tested in court.

According to Hardy’s complaint, as reported by Uncrowned on Yahoo Sports, “Defendants knew, or should have known, that the bout presented an extraordinary and foreseeable risk of serious neurological harm to Hardy.”

The lawsuit hinges on who was responsible for allowing Hardy to fight. Holden Boxing served as the licensed promoter for the event, while Hardy alleges that MVP helped arrange and profit from the bout, with Holden Boxing taking the formal regulatory role. Hardy also contends that individuals close to her, including longtime promoter Lou DiBella, opposed the rematch on safety grounds.

Serrano had previously defeated Hardy decisively in 2019. In the rematch, CompuBox recorded 242 power punches landed by Serrano across ten two‑minute rounds. Hardy has not fought since and says vision problems emerged while she was preparing for a bare‑knuckle bout in early 2024. She attributes her later neurological symptoms to the Serrano fight, noting that the punch count illustrates the bout’s severity but alone cannot establish the timing or cause of any specific injury.

Boxing permits risky contests, and a lopsided result does not automatically prove negligence. Hardy’s case rests on what the defendants knew about her condition before the opening bell, the roles they played in arranging the fight, and whether the evidence links the rematch to the disability she describes. The complaint raises serious allegations on each of these points, and the defendants’ responses and the underlying evidence will determine whether they withstand legal scrutiny.
