On the second anniversary of Liam Payne’s passing, Harry Styles delivered a heartfelt tribute during his performance on October 16.
The former One Direction singer died in Buenos Aires, Argentina, at the age of 31 following a fall from a hotel balcony on October 16, 2024. According to the Argentine prosecutor’s office, the cause of death was attributed to multiple traumas and significant internal and external bleeding.
Speaking to the audience during his current 30-night residency in New York, Styles expressed his gratitude for the venue and the city. “I feel incredibly lucky to get to play these shows here in New York, and this building means a lot to me,” he remarked.
“There are so many people in my life—friends and collaborators—that I wouldn’t have been able to do this without. And two years ago today, I lost one of those friends.”

“I feel incredibly lucky to get to play these shows here in New York, and, uhm, this building means a lot to me as I said, and I feel incredibly proud when I get to look up there, and see my name up there from the last time.… pic.twitter.com/t2M6QxRFTe

Styles continued, “I’m sure a lot of you have been through similar things. I hope you haven’t. But really, it’s just about looking after each other. So many people who have touched my life in such special ways—I wouldn’t be here without them. I’m going to play you a song I wrote for my friend about two years ago, if that’s all right.”

The singer then performed his poignant new track, ‘What Is Enough.’ Accompanied by gentle acoustic guitar, Styles delivered the moving lyric: “You dance until you’re tired.”
This tribute follows similar sentiments from other One Direction members. Niall Horan previously reflected on his memories of Payne, noting that the grief involved a blend of deep sadness and fond remembrance. Styles himself has noted that the loss caused him to re-evaluate his perspective on life, while Louis Tomlinson has spoken candidly about the immense difficulty of coping with the loss.
This performance follows a recent tribute Styles paid to Oscar Belgal, who was shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent on October 8. Belgal survived the incident, which occurred while his five-year-old son was in the vehicle, and is currently in a detention facility.
Styles’ ongoing residency at the iconic New York venue began in late August. Throughout the run, he has honored various figures, including Dolly Parton, and made a nod to Taylor Swift’s wedding, which took place at the same location.
The performances are part of his ‘Together, Together’ tour, which has already included a record-breaking 12-show stint at London’s Wembley Stadium, alongside dates in Amsterdam, São Paulo, and Mexico City. His Madison Square Garden run will conclude with a special “Harryween” performance on October 31, followed by shows in Melbourne and Sydney this December.
The 2027 tour dates are organized in partnership with Green Nation—Live Nation’s global sustainability initiative—aiming to reduce carbon emissions and promote eco-friendly travel. Additionally, Styles continues his decade-long support for Choose Love, and in the United States, proceeds will benefit HeadCount, an organization dedicated to voter registration and democratic engagement through music.
The tour supports his fourth solo studio album, ‘Kiss All The Time. Disco, Occasionally,’ released in March. The tour has received critical acclaim, including a five-star review in Amsterdam, where critics described it as a “hopeful celebration of community and connection.”
