Hashim Thaci Sentenced to 25 Years for War Crimes During Kosovo Conflict

Hashim Thaci, the former president of Kosovo, has been sentenced to 25 years in prison after being convicted of war crimes.

The 58-year-old was sentenced Wednesday at The Hague for offenses committed during Kosovo’s independence war against Serbia in the 1990s, a conflict that killed more than 10,000 people.

After a three-year trial, he was found guilty of murder, illegal arrests, torture, and cruel treatment, though several other allegations were not proven.

Thaci co-founded and commanded the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA), the independence-seeking force, and is regarded as a hero in Kosovo.

He faced accusations of killing nearly 100 people and committing additional atrocities, including enforced disappearances.

Thaci was tried alongside three former KLA commanders who faced similar charges.
