Eddie Hearn is fast-tracking 22-year-old Odel Kamara straight from his Matchroom contract signing to a professional debut on the October 3 Ben Whittaker vs. Conor Wallace card in Birmingham.
Hearn views Kamara as a potential major British draw; his seven national amateur titles provide ample promotional material, and pairing him with veteran trainer Tony Sims ensures an experienced hand to reshape his style for the professional ranks.
“It starts October 3 in Birmingham. I promise to give the fans excitement so they know what I’m all about,” Kamara said in Matchroom Boxing’s press release. “This is the start to a busy end to the year.”
The pledge of a busy schedule suggests Hearn intends to keep Kamara active multiple times before the end of 2026. Matchroom has granted him immediate DAZN exposure on a card topped by one of its premier British stars, allowing him to bypass the traditional untelevised small-hall circuit.
However, amateur accolades do not guarantee the stardom Hearn envisions. Kamara must add punching power and improve his stamina before he can handle demanding professional opposition.
Ben Whittaker offers a relevant case study. Since turning professional, Whittaker’s punches have become far more damaging, enabling him to deter opponents rather than relying solely on speed, movement, and scoring flurries. Kamara will need to undergo a similar evolution.
The three-round amateur format masked some of his deficiencies. Kamara frequently appeared fatigued by the third round—a liability that becomes critical when fights extend to six, eight, or ten rounds. Professional opponents will target the body, apply pressure, and force him to work once his legs begin to fade.
An amateur can afford to slow down late and still protect a points lead; a professional who tires after three rounds risks being broken down or stopped.
Matchroom has yet to announce Kamara’s debut opponent, so his entry-level test remains unknown. The platform and promotional ambition are in place; now Tony Sims must help Kamara develop the power and conditioning necessary to make Hearn’s plans a reality.
