“The causes of death are yet to be determined, but the heatwave is the leading hypothesis,” the local prosecutor Hélène Mourges told AFP.
The tragedy occurred as France faces perilous heatwave conditions, with temperatures exceeding 40°C across multiple regions. On Sunday, three additional fatalities were reported — two men and a woman aged between 80 and 95 — bringing the day’s heat-related deaths to five.
Météo-France has issued warnings that the exceptional heat will persist through the week, with Monday and Tuesday expected to deliver “exceptionally high levels” of temperature across broad swaths of the nation, potentially surpassing 40°C in many areas.
The French Ministry of Health has advised citizens to maintain regular hydration, avoid alcohol consumption, keep living spaces cool, and limit outdoor activities during peak daytime heat hours.
