Before Sleater-Kinney emerged, Corin Tucker—later a cornerstone of American indie rock—was part of the short-lived duo Heavens To Betsy. The band, formed with childhood friend Tracy Sawyer while Tucker studied at Evergreen in Olympia, Washington, debuted at K Records’ International Pop Underground festival in 1991. They pursued DIY touring, released several 7″ singles, and delivered the landmark 1994 feminist punk album Calculated. After the group dissolved that same year, Tucker launched Sleater-Kinney with Carrie Brownstein, setting the stage for a new chapter in indie music.
Last night, Heavens To Betsy returned to the stage for a modest, surprise performance at Portland’s Turn! Turn! Turn!—their first live appearance in 32 years. The show was a precursor to an announced fall reunion tour that will see the duo play intimate venues across the United States, revisiting many of the venues they once shared. The revived lineup has fans eager to witness the band’s resurgence after decades of silence.
