Heavy rain and flooding kill at least 62 in northern India

LUCKNOW, India — At least 62 individuals have perished amid sustained heavy rains and flash flooding across the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, according to officials reporting on Monday.

State authorities reported injuries amounting to 46 persons and the destruction of over one thousand residences after three consecutive days of torrential precipitation that triggered widespread inundation in several districts.

Educational institutions shuttered on Monday in parts of the state, including the capital Lucknow, as rescue operations relocated residents from submerged zones to secured locations. Officials issued warnings urging citizens to avoid nonessential travel through water‑logged terrain and to stay clear of fast‑moving rivers, streams, and drainage channels.

Meteorologists anticipate deterioration by Monday, observing that the weakened low‑pressure system over the Bay of Bengal suggests easing rains. Light showers are forecasted to linger in the eastern and western sections of the state through Tuesday.

Flooding also impacted the eastern state of Odisha, where more than 75 000 people were evacuated to temporary shelters, officials stated.

In neighboring Nepal, a series of weather‑related incidents between Thursday and Sunday resulted in 21 deaths. Five individuals remain missing and another five sustained injuries; floods and landslides damaged 194 houses.

Recovery efforts continue in Nepal after catastrophic August floods that claimed over 1 400 lives and left roughly 6 000 residents without homes.
