PESHAWAR, Pakistan — Eleven people lost their lives early Tuesday after a heavy downpour caused the roof of a mud‑brick house to collapse in the northwest region, according to police and rescue officials.
The incident took place in the Kohat district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, said Bilal Faizi of the provincial emergency service.
Rescue teams recovered the bodies, predominantly those of women and children, and transferred them to relatives for burial, Faizi added.
Heavy monsoon rains also struck the Gilgit‑Baltistan region on Monday, sparking landslides that blocked several roads and damaged homes, according to a regional emergency services statement.
Authorities have urged tourists to avoid traveling to northern Pakistan due to the heightened risk of landslides and flash flooding.
Pakistan routinely experiences heavy monsoon rains that often trigger floods and landslides, resulting in fatalities and extensive damage.
In 2022, unprecedented monsoon rains and floods submerged nearly one‑third of the country, claiming 1,739 lives and causing an estimated $30 billion in damage.
