Hidden Gems: The World’s Most Underrated Natural Wonders Worth Discovering]
The world’s most breathtaking natural wonders aren’t always the ones topping bucket lists. As concerns over overtourism continue to grow, travelers are increasingly seeking out lesser-known destinations that offer authentic, less-crowded experiences.
New research has identified the most underrated natural tourist destinations, revealing spots that deliver exceptional experiences with significantly fewer visitors. Icelandic outdoor clothing brand Icewear analyzed approximately 54,000 Google reviews from 75 global attractions to rank the world’s most underrated natural wonders.
The analysis examined reviews for positive sentiment words including “relaxing,” “amazing,” and “beautiful” to determine which locations offer the most overlooked experiences. While five European destinations made the top 30, only one – Staffa National Nature Reserve in Scotland – cracked the top five.
Iceland Claims Europe’s Most Underrated Destinations
Iceland stands out as Europe’s leader in underrated natural wonders, featuring twice in the rankings. Stuðlagil Canyon claims the 24th spot globally with 35.2% positive reviews, while Vatnajökull National Park ranks 29th with 28.2% positive sentiment.
Hidden for centuries, Stuðlagil Canyon only emerged in 2009 after the water level of the Jökulsá á Dal river was lowered during a hydroelectric project. Located in East Iceland, today’s visitors come to admire its striking basalt columns and, during the right season, the vivid turquoise glacial river that flows through the dramatic gorge.
Vatnajökull National Park, established in 2008 around Europe’s largest glacier, spans approximately 13 percent of Iceland. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it encompasses glacier lagoons, black sand plains, and the country’s highest peak, Hvannadalshnúkur, making it one of Iceland’s most diverse and spectacular landscapes.
The World’s Most Underrated Natural Wonders
Hoh Rain Forest, Washington, United States
Situated in Washington state, the Hoh Rain Forest tops the overall ranking as the most underrated natural wonder, with an impressive 69.6% of visitor reviews featuring positive language like “beautiful” and “amazing.”
Located within Olympic National Park, the forest is one of five U.S.-based natural wonders to appear in the top 30 list. Known for its dense green canopy of Douglas Fir, Western Red Cedar, and Big Leaf Maple, the area receives an extraordinary yearly average rainfall of 3.55 meters.
The forest offers countless hiking opportunities and all-season campsites, which consistently win over visitors seeking immersive wilderness experiences.
Crater Lake, Oregon, United States
In neighboring Oregon, Crater Lake achieves 68.5% positive reviews. Formed 7,700 years ago following a major volcanic eruption, the lake holds the distinction of being the deepest in the United States while boasting some of the world’s most beautiful blue water.
Its remarkable purity makes it a stunning destination for outdoor enthusiasts. During summer months, visitors can hike, camp, and fish, while winter brings popular snowshoe walking opportunities.
Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Centre, Alaska, United States
Located near Juneau, Alaska’s capital, the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Centre earns 67.2% positive reviews from visitors.
This 13-mile-long (nearly 21 km) river of ice connects to the 1,500 square mile (3,885 km²) Juneau Ice Field. Visitors can view floating blue icebergs in Mendenhall Lake while taking in views of towering mountain peaks. The area features numerous trails with waterfalls and salmon streams, offering exceptional wildlife viewing opportunities including black bears, porcupines, and bald eagles.
Staffa National Nature Reserve – Fingal’s Cave, Scotland
Off Scotland’s west coast, the uninhabited island of Staffa houses Fingal’s Cave, ranking fourth globally and highest in Europe with 62.8% of visitor reviews containing positive words.
Part of the Inner Hebrides, Staffa is renowned for its striking hexagonal basalt columns and the cathedral-like cave that inspired Felix Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture. Visitors reach the island by boat to explore the dramatic coastline and often spot puffins, black guillemots, and other seabirds that nest there during summer months.
Grand Prismatic Spring, Wyoming, United States
Located in Wyoming’s Yellowstone National Park, Grand Prismatic Spring ranks fifth among the world’s most underrated natural wonders with 61.9% positive visitor reviews.
As the largest hot spring in the United States and the third largest globally, it’s famous for its vivid rainbow colors created by heat-loving bacteria thriving in mineral-rich water. The spring measures approximately 110 meters across and 50 meters deep, offering spectacular views via boardwalks and nearby hiking trails.
World’s Most Overrated Natural Attractions
At the opposite end of the spectrum, the study also identified the most overrated natural wonders. These destinations received the lowest percentages of positive reviews featuring words like “beautiful,” “amazing,” or “breathtaking.”
