Arsenal’s strong start to the season has been marred by another defensive injury concern, with Piero Hincapie ruled out of Tuesday night’s Carabao Cup win over Ipswich Town due to a muscle issue.

The Gunners extended their winning streak with a 4-2 victory at Portman Road, where teenager Max Dowman captured the spotlight with a brace of goals.

Noni Madueke and Mikel Merino also found the net, but Hincapie’s absence further compounded Mikel Arteta’s mounting list of defensive availability problems.

According to football.london journalist Tom Canton, Hincapie sustained a muscular knock in the lead-up to the Ipswich match despite having trained earlier in the week.

His withdrawal forced Arteta into another defensive reshuffle.

The Ecuador international completed a permanent transfer from Bayer Leverkusen this summer, having spent the previous season on loan at Arsenal.

Hincapie has managed only 30 Premier League minutes so far this season, with Riccardo Calafiori established as Arteta’s first-choice at left-back. Nonetheless, he started both the Community Shield and Arsenal’s Champions League triumph over Napoli, underlining his importance as a rotation option.

This latest setback arrives at a particularly inconvenient moment, as Arsenal are already grappling with multiple defensive fitness concerns.

Ben White, Cristhian Mosquera and William Saliba were all unavailable for the Ipswich match, while Jurrien Timber was also excluded as Arsenal continued to manage his return to fitness.

Defensive Depth Under Pressure at Arsenal

While Hincapie may not yet be an automatic starter, this is nonetheless an injury Arsenal can ill afford.

His versatility makes him especially valuable, as he is capable of playing both centre-back and left-back. When the fixture list becomes congested, players with that kind of flexibility become indispensable.

Arsenal have already demonstrated impressive squad depth, with young midfielder Marli Salmon starting against Ipswich as Arteta made nine changes from the side that beat Sunderland.

However, repeated unavailability of defenders risks turning depth into a genuine liability.

The silver lining is that there are currently no signs suggesting Hincapie’s issue is severe. Arsenal would be wise to avoid rushing him back for the Brighton trip if there is any danger of worsening the injury.
