Patrick Stewart, the distinguished British actor celebrated for his commanding roles in Star Trek and X-Men, passed away on October 28 at his Los Angeles home at the age of 86. His family announced his passing through an Instagram statement, revealing that he had battled Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia.
Born in Mirfield, Yorkshire, in 1940, Stewart built an illustrious career spanning decades, earning acclaim both on stage and screen. A revered member of the Royal Shakespeare Company, he became a global icon as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation and its spin-offs. His contributions to drama were recognized with a knighthood in 2010.
In a touching tribute, longtime friend and fellow actor Ian McKellen reflected on Stewart’s roots, writing, “Before everything else, Patrick was defined by being born and bred in Yorkshire—the proud county in the north of England which he loved to the end.” McKellen recounted their first encounter in London, where Stewart shared news of his Star Trek audition: “But Patrick, think of your stage career in the UK. Do you really want to risk—getting lost in Hollywood for years and years?”
McKellen praised Stewart’s choice to embrace the role, stating, “Thank goodness for us all that he did—for not just his devoted Trekkies but film and theatre audiences, who marveled at his using international celebrity to star in a string of cinema successes (X-Men, of course) and in great classical plays by Shakespeare, Ibsen, Arthur Miller, Peter Shaffer, Pinter and Beckett at Stratford-upon-Avon, in London’s West End and on Broadway.”
Hugh Jackman, Stewart’s co-star in the X-Men franchise, honored him as a “tremendous friend” and “one of the greats of stage and screen.” William Shatner, himself a Star Trek legend, paid homage on social media, calling Stewart “a friend, a colleague, and a magnificent actor,” noting his ability to bring “intelligence, grace, and a deep sense of humanity” to every performance.
What a heartbreaking week it has been. Sir Patrick Stewart was a friend, a colleague, and a magnificent actor. From the stage to the bridge of the Enterprise, he brought intelligence, grace, and a deep sense of humanity to everything he did. Captain Picard stood for the best of…

RIP Patrick Stewart. What an actor. I still can’t believe he agreed to do this scene. And he didn’t even mind when I ruined every take. Legend. pic.twitter.com/QazyDScCOU

Survived by his wife Sunny, whom he married in 2013, and his two children, Stewart left behind a legacy marked by profound artistic excellence and enduring influence.
