Honda is recalling approximately 98,892 vehicles in the United States due to a mechanical flaw that may cause airbags to deploy unexpectedly during a collision.
According to a May 21 notice from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the recall affects select Honda and Acura models from the 2016 through 2026 model years. Federal regulators explained that a weight sensor in the front passenger seat is prone to cracking and short-circuiting over time, which could trigger an unintended airbag deployment during an accident.

The NHTSA warned that such malfunctions significantly increase the risk of injury to passengers. The recall encompasses several popular models, including the Acura MDX, RDX, and TLX, as well as the Honda Accord, Civic, CR-V, Odyssey, Pilot, Passport, Ridgeline, HR-V, Fit, Insight, and Accord Hybrid.
Authorized Honda dealers will replace the faulty front passenger seat weight sensors free of charge. Owners are expected to receive notification letters starting July 6.

This action expands a previous recall from February 2024 that affected over 75,000 vehicles. A complete list of affected vehicles is available on the NHTSA website.

This recent recall follows a similar action in April, where Honda recalled more than 440,000 Odyssey minivans. In that instance, a software error could cause side curtain airbags to deploy during minor road impacts, such as hitting speed bumps, potholes, or debris.
Honda did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
