Thousands of spectators and paddlers have gathered along Hong Kong’s Tsim Sha Tsui promenade to celebrate the 50th edition of the International Dragon Boat Races. The event, held annually, kicked off on Saturday with a mix of competition and cultural pride.
Over 220 teams from 16 regions, including Hong Kong, Australia, and Qatar, are participating in the two-day competition. The races have attracted both local residents and international visitors eager to support their favorite teams as they navigate Victoria Harbour.
Attendees praised the event’s “well-organized” structure and “exciting” atmosphere. Local competitors noted heightened intensity this year, crediting the growing global popularity of dragon boat racing as a key factor.
Francis Tang Lam Tat, 71, chairman of the Hytera dragon boat team, described this year’s competition as “highly competitive.” He mentioned that Hytera’s two mixed teams have advanced to the semifinals and expressed optimism that one could reach the finals.
“Everyone is well-prepared for the races,” he said. “As this marks the 50th anniversary, organizers extended invitations to dragon boat teams worldwide to join in Hong Kong.”
