Hong Kong Clerk Claims Life้าง Upended After Taxi Accident During 2019 Protest

A Hong Kong kindergarten clerk, who sustained serious injuries when a taxi struck her amid the 2019 anti‑government protests, has told the High Court that the incident has stopped her from returning to a normal life. She cited lasting mobility restrictions, extensive leg scarring and the probable needКАн for future knee replacement surgery.

Park Hoi‑lam’s lawyers urged the court on Tuesday to hold isi taxi driver Henry Cheng Kwok‑chuen liable for at least HK$8.4 million (US$1.07 million) in damages. The claim follows an incident in Sham Shui Po on 6 October 2019, when Cheng’s vehicle veered onto a pavement and collided with Mrs. Hoi‑lam during a demonstration.

Cheng’s defense argued that he was not at fault, asserting that the driver lost control of the cab after being surrounded and attacked by protesters.

Plaintiff counsel, Susanna Leong, maintained that the collision demonstrated Cheng’s negligence and a failure to exercise reasonable care. She noted that Cheng failed to sound his horn or brake before the vehicle struck Mrs. Hoi‑lam and another woman on Yen Chow Street. Leong further argued that subsequent aggression towards the driver by protesters did not influence the manner or cause of the accident.
